SUMMIT VARSITY AND JV GROUND CARDINALS OF PLAINFIELD

The Summit squad entered play today still reeling from the 3 set loss to New Providence yesterday and had to deal with the unexpected loss of both setters due to illness for today's match versus the Plainfield Cardinals.  Varsity had comfortably beaten the Cardinals at home in the first match of the season 25-9, 25-8 but JV had lost a heartbreaker in 3 sets and was looking to avenge that loss.

Summit saw a much better Plainfield team take the court and, with both setters out, it fell upon Angela Scott and Maria Ospina to run the offense against Plainfield.  It took until the midpoint of the first set for the Hilltoppers to start playing smoothly.  Summit went on an 8-2 run that blew the game open after Plainfield had crawled to within 4 at 10-6 behind kills from Margo Reigle and Casey Nardino and an ace by Emani Miles.  Summit cruised from that point (18-8) and soon closed out the set with another good 7-3run which ended with Hannah Calabrese's 2 aces that sealed the set at 25-10.

Set 2 saw Summit jump out to a 4-1 lead off 3 consecutive aces by Angela Scott and the Hilltoppers managed to extend the lead to 6 at 11-5 as Caitlin Osmulski, Nicole Bazalar, Casey Nardino and Cassidy O'malley all got kills to extend the lead.  Another ace by Angela Scott later in the set had Summit up 19-8 as the Cardinals could not eat into the lead SHS had established.  At 20-10, Summit seemed to relax a bit and the Cardinals managed to outscore the Hilltoppers by a 6-5 margin the rest of the way but  SHS took the set 25-16 as the Hilltoppers weren't really threatened.

Cassidy O'Malley and Casey Nardino each hit for 3 kills and Julianne Smolyn dug up 7 balls to lead the Hilltoppers to victory. Angela Scott was the star of the match though as both Angela and Maria-Ospina ran the offense in an emergency today and the team did not skip a beat.  Angela's 4 aces led the team and her 8 assists were key in the success of Summit today.

JV SWEEPS IN 2 AND ERASES EARLIER 3 SET LOSS

JV turned in an excellent performance today, defeating Plainfield 25-15, 25-11 and erasing a 3 set loss they earned versus this opponent at the opening of the season.  Summit's serves and passing were much improved and led to offensive opportunities.  Sammi Auerbach and Grace Galuppo combined for 5 aces to lead the team in the first set.

The second set started a little slower for the squad but once the team regained control of the ball at 4-8 down, the squad turned up the heat from the service line (13 aces) and quickly took control of the set.  With Summit trailing 8-6, Taylor Thompson ran off 7 straight aces to push the Hilltoppers to a 13-8 lead.  Although the team lost serve eventually, Plainfield couldn't take advantage and Sammi Auerbach stepped back to serve and netted 5 more aces which effectively put away the game. Summit won the match and set in a convincing 25-11 manner.   Congrats to the JV for their 3rd VICTORY!
