The 13th seeded Hilltoppers took on the 19th seeded Roselle Park looking to get its first victory in the county tournament since 2011, when the team won 3 straight matches to get to the finals for the second time in program history. Summit did not disappoint their fans and beat Roselle Park- despite dropping set 2 to the Panthers- by a wide margin, 25-13, 24-26, 25-8.
Casey Nardino and Cass O'Malley were the catalysts for the offense, hitting for 8 kills apiece. Margo Reigle and Kathleen Morano added 5 kills apiece as the setters, led by Jess Salter's 17 assists, ran a very effective offense that hit for a season high .303 and 31 kills. The Summit serving attack was exceptional as well, getting 20 aces, a season best, led by the setters -Jess Salter and Gabbie Mejia- who paced the Summit serving with 7 and 6 aces respectively. The team hit for a 27% ace % and had an outstanding 88% serve %.
Summit hit for .545 in the first set (13k-1err) and .250 3rd set (8k-4err) and a .421 for those 2 sets. The offense was nearly unstoppable for these 2 sets however the 2nd set was vastly different as SHS hit only .142 despite 10 kills because of the 6 errors they had as well. Summit gave up only 6 aces for the match and Julianne Smolyn got 8 digs to pace the Summit defense. Casey Nardino once again led the Hilltoppers in scoring, accounting for 11 of the team's 53 points (21%).
The team goes on the road on Monday for a regular season non-divisional match against Dayton and will travel to Cranford for the next round of the UCIAC Tournament on Tuesday. Summit will be at home for the last 2 regular season matches against Roselle on Wednesday and Oak Knoll on Thursday.
