HILLTOPPERS GAIN VICTORY OVER RAMS WITH OFFENSIVE OUTBURST

Summit took on the Rams of Roselle in a non-conference matchup this past Wednesday on Senior Night and came away with a 3 set win that saw the Hilltoppers generate 30 kills, the 2nd highest offensive output of the season.

Summit jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first set behind Casey Nardino's serving (3 aces) and never looked back as the Hilltoppers finished out the set 25-11.  Summit hit for 8 kills and a .250 hit %. The team also served at an 88% clip with 5 aces and added 1 block to score 14 points in the set. Casey Nardino scored 7 of the team's points (2k, 4a, 1blk) and Cass O'Malley hit for a team leading 3 kills.

The seniors shone in set 2 as Coach Martins put out a line-up that had all 6 seniors playing.  It took a few points for the squad to get used to each other on the court but they kept themselves in the set with a precise attack that yielded 12 kills in the set.  Summit was locked in a close battle throughout the set until, with the score knotted at 13, the Hilltopers went on a 6-2 run behind kills by Cassidy O'Malley, Julianne Smolyn and Jocelyn Mendez who also hit for 2 aces in the run.  With the score 19-15, an SHS victory seemed certain but the Rams fought back and dug up numerous Summit attacks which they converted to kills to tie the score late 24-24.  Momentum was on the Rams' side and they finished SHS a few points later to take set 2 26-24.

SHS hit for a match high 12 kills but only hit a .193 for the set despite scoring a total of 19 points.

The 3rd set was a bit anti-climactic after the finish of the second set as the Hilltoppers yet again took control early of the set and never looked back.  Angela Scott and Jess Salter blew the set open with the score 4-2 as the two athletes served a combined 3 aces and 6 service points to give Summit an 11-3 lead.  Summit kept the pressure on and had expanded the lead to 20-8 on a 9-5 run behind the offense of Kathleen Morano who closed out the set a few points later (25-11) with her team leading 4th kill of the set.  Morano and O'Malley combined for 7 kills and a .778 hitting % in the set. Summit scored 14 points in the set behind an impressive 10kill, 0 error performance by its front line.  The Hilltoppers had an incredible hitting % of .779 for the set which more than made up for the sub-par serving of the team (4 aces-8 err).

Cassidy O'Malley led the team with 9 kills and a .667 hitting % while teammate Casey Nardino led all scorers with 10 points for the match.  Julianne Smolyn led the team defensively with 7 digs and Emani Miles and Jess Salter led the way as passers with a 2.5 and a 2.0 rating, respectively.
