HILLTOPPERS GET 1ST HOME WIN AND SNAP LOSING STREAK IN 2-0 WIN VS. PLAINFIELD

The Hilltoppers were looking to get the sweep of the Cardinals and break their losing streak and snap their home winless streak.  SHS was able to accomplish both in a comfortable 25-13, 25-16 over Plainfield.

Val Guzman led off the match with a 9 service point run that included 6 aces to give the Hilltoppers a cushion the team would not give up.  After the Cardinals cut the lead to 9-2, a Casey Nardino got the ball back to Summit up 10-2.  Angela Scott stepped up and hammered 3 aces to extend the lead to 13-2 and the rout was on.  Summit outscored Plainfield 12-11 the rest of the way as the Cardinals settled down and began to match Summit's offensive output but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome the deficit.  SHS took game one 25-13 led by Casey Nardino's 3 kills and 1 ace and Guzman's and Scott's combined 9 aces.  Summit served at 88% and gave up only 2 aces in the game 1 win.

Game two was a bit more competitive early as an early service error broke the Hilltoppers' momentum from game one but Angela Scott hit another 2 aces and Gabby Mejia ripped a rare ace to keep SHS ahead 8-4.  Hannah Calabrese, making her setting debut, had 2 quick kills off overpasses that had Summit well in control at 14-5.

Plainfield did not give up though and after a few Hilltopper miscues, the Cardinals hit for a couple of aces and had Summit looking at the scoreboard as the lead had dwindled to 19-15 after a Cardinal 10-5 run.  Two straight Plainfield hitting errors stalled the run and Rau Soares nailed a kill to get SHS a comfortable 22-15 lead.  Casey Nardino ripped an ace and had another service point to close out the game and match 25-16.

Calabrese led the team with 2 kills in the game but the 5 aces to only 3 errors was the best news as the team served again at 88% and only gave up 3 aces.

Summit will look to continue its winning ways at home tomorrow versus the Roselle Rams.
