2014 OPENING SCRIMMAGE VS. VIKINGS GIVES GLIMPSE OF FUTURE

The Lady Hilltoppers took on the Vikings of Par Hills this past Wednesday in the opening scrimmage of the 2014 season.  Summit played three different lineups and battled the Vikings to 22-25, 12-25 and 25-14 scores.

In set 1, the Lady Hilltoppers hit for a match high 8 kills led by Kathleen Morano's 3 kills. The team served 86%, missing only 3 serves. Jess Salter and Jocelyn Mendes led the Hilltoppers with a 2.0 and 1.83 pass rating and Jocelyn along with Caitlin Osmulski and Val Guzman led the team with 3 digs each.

The Hilltoppers trailed 9-3 early after an attack error but closed the gap to 1 at 10-11 with a 7-2 run punctuated with a service error by the Vikings. Kills by Morano and Osmulski helped spark the Hilltoppers to a 19-17 lead. A few points later Salter put down a kill to give the Hilltoppers a 22-19 lead but the Vikings closed out the set on a 6-0 run fueled by Summit hitting errors.

The second set loss by the score of 12-25 was a result of 7 serve receive errors and a team pass rating of a 0.90. The silver lining of the set was the Hilltopper serving, as it hit for 3 aces, one each by Maria Ospina, Angela Scott and Sandra Bazalar.

The 3rd set saw Summit tie the score at 10 after a Casey Nardino kill and then proceed to go on a 15-4 run to close the set out sparked by the serving of Emani Miles (5 aces) and Gabby Mejia (2 aces). The team served at 84% and scored on 7 aces (29%) to go along with their 6 kills.

The Lady Hilltoppers travel to the Crimson of Morristown Beard on the 27th.
