FOCUSING ON WHAT'S IMPORTANT

The Hilltoppers were part of the DIG PINK SIDEOUT FOUNDATION EVENT at Roselle High this past Wednesday in a combined effort to acknowledge and appreciate local survivors of breast cancer and to also draw attention to the disease and raise funds for research, especially in the field of stage 4 diagnoses where the least research has been done.

The Hilltoppers themselves are also doing a 5 mile Walk on November 15th to raise funds and awareness for this issue as the last team event of the year.  It will provide the student-athletes with an opportunity to bond and use their connections to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

The Lady Hilltoppers want to thank Coach Marcus Daniels of Roselle for organizing the event at Roselle and for inviting the Hilltoppers to take part in the event.  The following is a link to the article written online regarding the event and also some pictures which show the true spirit of interscholastic sports and the positive results of teenagers working for a greater cause.

HILLTOPPERS' LAST 2 MATCHES MIRROR SEASON HIGHS AND LOWS... JV FINISHES the 2014 CAMPAIGN IN STYLE

Summit entered the last week of the season looking to end on a high note with 2 matches against Roselle -whom the team beat on Senior Night by a 2-1 margin- and Roselle Catholic, the #4 seeded team in Union County.

Anyone following the stories on this blog will know that the Hilltoppers' fate in 3 set matches this year went a long way in contributing to the team's record.  SHS went 4W-6L in 3 set matches but were 1W-5L during the midpoint of the season which impacted Summit's overall record tremendously for seeding purposes in county and state brackets.

On Wednesday, against Roselle, Summit dominated in the first set, scoring 16 points and hitting for a .333 hitting % in a 25-18 set victory.  Summit scored only 12 points in set 2 and hit for only 8 kills and a .103 hitting % as the team dropped a 19-25 decision in the set although SHS led 16-14 in the latter part of the set.

In set 3,  Summit fought from a 10-14 deficit to tie the score at 16 and lead late 20-19 but it gave up the last 6 points to lose 25-19 in a set that had the team scoring only 12 points with 9 kills and a .136 hitting %.

The result was a match where Summit out-scored Roselle 40-38, out-killed their opponents 29-17 (Roselle out-aced Summit 20-7) but Summit's errors, especially in sets 2 and 3 (16 of them) decided the match.

On Thursday, against the #4 team in the county, Summit's fans could not be very hopeful of the outcome after Wednesday's collapse.  The Hilltoppers gave forth their best effort of the year however, much to the surprise of the RC faithful.

Summit lost the first set 25-15 but the story of the set wasn't RC's dominance but rather Summit's errors.  Summit scored only 9 points and hit for a -.187 yet the team was only outscored by 2 (11-9) for the set.  Summit's 12 unforced hitting errors were the difference in the set as RC yielded only 6 errors to the Hilltoppers.

Summit's senior Nicole Bazalar came in for Casey Nardino in the second set and much like an earlier match versus Scotch Plains, the OH/MB had an immediate emotional and playing impact on the team.  Summit's defense was outstanding, digging up 22 RC attacks and forcing the RC offense into many bad swings due to their relentless offensive pressure.  Summit actually led 10-3 at one point in the set but the team saw RC come roaring back on a 16-4 run to take what looked like an insurmountable lead at 19-14 thanks to Summit's poor passing and hitting errors.  With their backs against the wall, the Hilltoppers fought back, didn't give in and went on a 8-4 run that had Summit within 1 at 23-22 against the #4 team in the county.

But just when the Hilltoppers were at the brink of an amazing performance and a set win, a service error halted the momentum and opened the door for RC to take the set, taking the wind out of the Hilltopper sails.

It was, in many ways, a testament to how good this team could have been this year and will be in the future without some crucial spells of errors.  Summit took on one of the big 4 in the county on their home court and could have easily taken the match but the errors that have been a major problem all year became the reason the team fell short yet again.

The Summit 2014 version of the volleyball team has learned many a lesson on how hard it is to win and how easily a match can be lost in a game where all points matter.  The JV squad has been learning that lesson all season as they learn how to play the game itself, an equally difficult task.  Summit JV started the season 2W-8L and finished the 2014 campaign on a 8W-4L run that saw the team beat teams it had not beaten in over 5 years in Rahway, Scotch-Plains, Kent Place and Roselle Catholic and reach double digit wins (10)  in only the 3rd time in program history!!

JV Hilltoppers defeated Wardlaw-Hartridge and Linden early, then beat Plainfield, Scotch-Plains Fanwood, Kent Place, Rahway, Dayton, Roselle twice and finally, Roselle Catholic.

HILLTOPPERS GAIN VICTORY OVER RAMS WITH OFFENSIVE OUTBURST

Summit took on the Rams of Roselle in a non-conference matchup this past Wednesday on Senior Night and came away with a 3 set win that saw the Hilltoppers generate 30 kills, the 2nd highest offensive output of the season.

Summit jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first set behind Casey Nardino's serving (3 aces) and never looked back as the Hilltoppers finished out the set 25-11.  Summit hit for 8 kills and a .250 hit %. The team also served at an 88% clip with 5 aces and added 1 block to score 14 points in the set. Casey Nardino scored 7 of the team's points (2k, 4a, 1blk) and Cass O'Malley hit for a team leading 3 kills.

The seniors shone in set 2 as Coach Martins put out a line-up that had all 6 seniors playing.  It took a few points for the squad to get used to each other on the court but they kept themselves in the set with a precise attack that yielded 12 kills in the set.  Summit was locked in a close battle throughout the set until, with the score knotted at 13, the Hilltopers went on a 6-2 run behind kills by Cassidy O'Malley, Julianne Smolyn and Jocelyn Mendez who also hit for 2 aces in the run.  With the score 19-15, an SHS victory seemed certain but the Rams fought back and dug up numerous Summit attacks which they converted to kills to tie the score late 24-24.  Momentum was on the Rams' side and they finished SHS a few points later to take set 2 26-24.

SHS hit for a match high 12 kills but only hit a .193 for the set despite scoring a total of 19 points.

The 3rd set was a bit anti-climactic after the finish of the second set as the Hilltoppers yet again took control early of the set and never looked back.  Angela Scott and Jess Salter blew the set open with the score 4-2 as the two athletes served a combined 3 aces and 6 service points to give Summit an 11-3 lead.  Summit kept the pressure on and had expanded the lead to 20-8 on a 9-5 run behind the offense of Kathleen Morano who closed out the set a few points later (25-11) with her team leading 4th kill of the set.  Morano and O'Malley combined for 7 kills and a .778 hitting % in the set. Summit scored 14 points in the set behind an impressive 10kill, 0 error performance by its front line.  The Hilltoppers had an incredible hitting % of .779 for the set which more than made up for the sub-par serving of the team (4 aces-8 err).

Cassidy O'Malley led the team with 9 kills and a .667 hitting % while teammate Casey Nardino led all scorers with 10 points for the match.  Julianne Smolyn led the team defensively with 7 digs and Emani Miles and Jess Salter led the way as passers with a 2.5 and a 2.0 rating, respectively.

VARSITY AND JV'S COUNTY TOURNAMENT RUN COMES TO AN END

The Hilltoppers took both squads on the road in an effort to continue their run into their respective County Tournaments.  The Varsity Squad took on #3 Cranford and despite their best efforts, the team came out on the losing end with a 25-11, 25-12 loss.  The team trailed early and was never much of a threat in set 1 as Summit had a hard time generating any offense and fell 25-11.  The second set saw the Hilltoppers close to within 1 at 10-11 but another major Cranford run took care of any momentum gained by the Hilltoppers and the team succumbed 25-12.

Julianne Smolyn tacked on 9 digs to her season total.  Kathleen Morano led the way with 5 kills offensively.

The JV Squad fought hard but also fell in their county match by a 2-0 score after a 25-11, 25-10 set result.

HILLTOPPERS STUNNED BY BULLDOGS... JV DOES THE JOB

The Hilltoppers were entering their match versus the Dayton Bulldogs fresh off their best weekend of the year with 2 3 set losses versus top 10 teams in the county and 2 significant wins versus Rahway and Roselle Park.  Maybe it was overconfidence or looking past their opponent to tomorrow's county match but either way, Summit was not ready for the Bulldogs and played error filled volleyball that allowed the Bulldogs to have the opportunity to steal the match 23-25, 25-20 and 17-25.

The first set was a back and forth affair but defined by both Summit's scoring and errors.  Although the team scored 12 points on kills and 5 on aces, SHS also had 8 hitting errors and 5 service errors.  Dayton on the other hand mustered only 6 kills, 2 blocks and 4 aces (SHS 17 points v Dayton 12 points) but had only 6 total errors. The Hilltoppers had 31 total attack attempts to Dayton's 14 but the 13 unforced errors committed by SHS were too much to overcome.

The 2nd set saw a new lineup enter the match for Summit as Coach Martins tried to find a spark.  Summit managed only 4 kills, 4 aces and 1 block for a mere 9 points but the team only missed 2 serves and the serving pressure kept Dayton's attacks out of system which forced the Bulldogs into numerous errors.  Dayton matched Summit's point total with 9 points and out-killed SHS 6-4 but the 6 service errors by the Bulldogs turned out to be the deciding factor in the set as Summit held on for a 25-20 set win.

The 3rd set started off badly for SHS as the team trailed 7-1 early and never got on track, getting only as close as 14-17 late before Dayton went on an 8-3 run to finish Summit off.  The Hilltoppers put out the best hitters of the day for set 3 but the team only managed 4 kills, 1 ace and 2 blocks in the set.  Dayton was the recipient however of 8 Summit hitting errors, 2 missed serves and 1 ball handling error.  Summit was outscored 10-7 in the set but it was the Hilltoppers' 15 errors that ended the set and match for the team.

JV CLOSES OUT BULLDOGS FOR 7TH WIN

The JV team used their serving and an error free attack to control their match versus the Bulldogs.  Although the squad trailed midway through both sets (15-12 and 13-11), the team bounced back and kept the serving pressure up and made key hits to distance themselves late from the Bulldogs and win a straight 2-0 25-21, 25-17 for their 7th victory of the season.

FIRST COUNTY WIN SINCE 2011 - HILLTOPPERS DOMINANT

The 13th seeded Hilltoppers took on the 19th seeded Roselle Park looking to get its first victory in the county tournament since 2011, when the team won 3 straight matches to get to the finals for the second time in program history.  Summit did not disappoint their fans and beat Roselle Park- despite dropping set 2 to the Panthers- by a wide margin, 25-13, 24-26, 25-8.

Casey Nardino and Cass O'Malley were the catalysts for the offense, hitting for 8 kills apiece.  Margo Reigle and Kathleen Morano added 5 kills apiece as the setters, led by Jess Salter's 17 assists, ran a very effective offense that hit for a season high .303 and 31 kills.  The Summit serving attack was exceptional as well, getting 20 aces, a season best, led by the setters -Jess Salter and Gabbie Mejia- who paced the Summit serving with 7 and 6 aces respectively. The team hit for a 27% ace % and had an outstanding 88% serve %.

Summit hit for .545 in the first set (13k-1err) and .250 3rd set (8k-4err) and a .421 for those 2 sets.  The offense was nearly unstoppable for these 2 sets however the 2nd set was vastly different as SHS hit only .142 despite 10 kills because of the 6 errors they had as well.  Summit gave up only 6 aces for the match and Julianne Smolyn got 8 digs to pace the Summit defense.  Casey Nardino once again led the Hilltoppers in scoring, accounting for 11 of the team's 53 points (21%).

The team goes on the road on Monday for a regular season non-divisional match against Dayton and will travel to Cranford for the next round of the UCIAC Tournament on Tuesday.  Summit will be at home for the last 2 regular season matches against Roselle on Wednesday and Oak Knoll on Thursday.

HILLTOPPERS EARN A HARD-FOUGHT VICTORY OVER RAHWAY

The Hilltoppers came off their great match over Scotch-Plains looking to get a victory over another county rival they had not beaten since 2011.  Summit faltered in the second set but prevailed in a highly competitive third set to take the match 25-18, 14-25, 25-21 for the team's 4th win and its 1st over Rahway since the 2011 season.  JV completed the sweep after a 25-21, 25-21 victory over Rahway for their 6th win of the year.

Summit and Rahway started off slowly, with both teams missing numerous serves and committing unforced hitting errors.  Rahway held a slim 14-12 lead just after the midpoint of the set but neither team had played particularly well to that point.  The Hilltoppers' own Angela Scott stepped up and did what she has been doing all season long, scoring from the service line.  She hit for 4 straight aces and pulled Summit from a 2 point deficit to a 2 point lead at 16-14.  Summit never looked back and extended the lead to 24-16 behind Emani Miles' serving and after a Rahway service error, SHS had the set at 25-18.

Summit hit for only 6 kills but added 8 aces and gave up none (passed a 2.15) in the set 1 win.

In set 2, the serve receive deserted Summit for a bit and the Hilltoppers found themselves 21-9 down before too long.  The team played even from that point on and although they lost the set 25-14, Summit seemed to have gotten its groove back. SHS got 8 kills in the set and had 1 ace but gave up 3 in the process and had a pass rating of only 1.73.

The 3rd set saw a Summit team that had a lot more life and refused to go down the path of the prior 3 set matches in which late collapses cost the team victories.  Summit and Rahway were locked up in a 3-3 battle when Casey Nardino stepped up and got SHS the next 5 points behind the tough serving that yielded many easy attack opportunities for the Hilltoppers to convert. When the dust settled, the Hilltoppers held an 8-4 lead that they would not relinquish.

Summit extended the lead to 14-6 just after the midpoint of the set behind a Kathleen Morano kill and despite Rahway's best efforts, the Hilltoppers were able to match the Indians point by point and seemingly had the match in hand at 20-16 after a Cassidy O'Malley kill.

But a familiar thing occurred at that point, a timeout by Rahway. Typical of the team so far this season, the timeout seemed to break the momentum SHS had built and the team saw Rahway go on a 5-1 run that had the teams deadlocked at 21 after 3 consecutive Summit hitting errors. Kathleen Morano stepped up though and broke the momentum with a huge kill that lifted Summit to 22-21 and after 2 Emani Miles' aces, the Hilltoppers had the stranglehold on the set 24-21.  Although the Hilltoppers lost serve, the team ran a successful attack and saw Rahway not be able to transition successfully which gave Summit its 25-22 set and match victory.

Casey Nardino led all scorers with 10 points behind 4 kills, 3 blocks and 3 aces in a very complete game.  Margo Reigle was the top kill producer with 8 kills and Julianne Smolyn led the defensive effort with 9 digs and a 2.33 pass rating that yielded no errors.  Angela Scott hit for 5 of the team's 13 aces and the team gave up only 4 aces (3 in second set).

VARSITY AND JV LOSE 3 SET HEARTBREAKERS TO SCOTCH PLAINS

The Varsity Squad felt that they had been competitive with Scotch Plains in their home match during the second set where the team held a lead late but let a late run by the Raiders end their chances to tie the match.  With that confidence, Summit took the floor at Scotch Plains and played one of their best sets of the season, hitting for 10 kills, getting 2 solo blocks from Nicole Bazalar, 1 ace and 13 digs to win the set 25-21 despite 5 service errors.  It was no surprise that in the set win, Summit gave up only  ace.  Margo Reigle hit for 4 kills, Julianne Smolyn dug up 6 balls and Jess Salter dialed up 6 assists as the three captains led the way to the set victory.

The second set was really not a different story until late in the set.  Summit led 15-11 but Scotch Plains closed the gap to 15-13 and it looked like another late collapse by the Hilltoppers.  Summit, however, reacted and fought back, extending the lead to 21-16 and looking like they had the Raiders defeated.  But 2 kills by SP's middle hitter, 2 hitting errors by Summit and 1 ace against, the Raiders were back in the match at 21-21.  Summit regained the lead after a free ball error by Scotch Plains but a key missed serve gave the momentum right back to SP.  Summit's passing was not perfect in the next 3 points and it led to poor attacks which gave the Raiders to run their offense and score 3 points to finish off Summit 25-22.  Summit hit for 7 kills and 6 aces (2 each from Angela Scott and Gabbie Mejia) but only had 9 digs and still committed 4 serving errors.

The team could not recover emotionally and it affected the quality of their play as Scotch Plains started off set 3 by taking a 13-7 lead midway through the set. Summit cut the lead down to 3 at 13-10 but another big Raider run had them up 20-10 late.  The teams split points after that and Summit ran out of time in a 25-15 loss.  Summit managed only 6 kills and had no aces in the set but gave up 4 aces in the set loss.

Margo Reigle led the way with 8 kills and Kathleen Morano chipped in 6 to lead the way.  Julianne Smolyn's 9 digs paved the way for Summit's 31 digs. Nicole Bazalar tied for second in point scoring with 6 points thanks to her 4 kills and 2 solo blocks out of the middle.

The JV Squad came back in set 1 from a 24-20 deficit to win 26-24 in a stunning turn of events as the Summit serving got 3 late aces to get Summit out of the hole they had put themselves in.  The second set, however, saw the team's serve receive fall apart and the Raiders dominated throughout, ending the Summit squad's chances with a 25-12 set win.

The 3rd set was a close set with both teams taking brief leads through th latter portions of the set but Summit's passing faltered late and the team found itself down 19-14 late.  But the serving attack of SHS got the team back into the game as the team closed to 2 at 19-17 but the Raiders fought back and had the Hilltoppers on the brink of elimination at 24-19.  Taylor Thompson stepped up and served an ace and 3 consecutive near ace serves which allowed Summit to run easy attacks and get to within 1 at 24-23.  The next point was a microcosm of the entire season as the team served tough, got an easy ball to defend but could not capitalize and tie the game.  The Raiders defended the Summit attack and finished it off with a middle attack for a 25-23 win.

HILLTOPPERS FALL SHORT AT KENT PLACE BUT JV GETS A BIG WIN!

Summit walked, literally, across the street to take on town foes Kent Place in a division rematch of a game that the Hilltoppers lost in 3 at home earlier this season.  SHS started off slow against the Dragons and dropped the first set 17-25 but came back and played a wonderful 2nd set, bowing out after a hard-fought 26-28 loss.

In set 1, Summit stayed with the Dragons early with Casey Nardino getting a key kill along the way. The Dragons used their serving to pull away on a 5-1 run that gave KP a 9-4 lead and featured 2 aces by the Dragons.  Although Summit managed to get the serve back, KP kept the pressure on with their serving and offense and soon had the lead up to 21-8.  Summit settled down and outscored the Dragons 9-4 the rest of the way but ran out of time in the 25-17 loss.

Summit's lack of passing accuracy cost them dearly in the set and it stymied the offense as the team managed only 4 kills.  The team also struggled serving with a 13/17 (77%) and only 1 ace.

The second set started off fast for the Hilltoppers with the team jumping out to a 5-1 lead after an ace by Gabbie Mejia and 3 kills by Margo Reigle.  Summit kept the Dragons at bay near the midpoint of the match as an ace by Angela Scott and kills by Kathleen Morano and Cassidy O'Malley gave Summit an 11-6 lead.

Kent Place kept fighting back though and got to within 3 at 16-14.  Despite kills by Cassidy O'Malley and Casey Nardino, KP got to within 1 late at 19-18.  Summit looked poised to take the set though as a a block and hitting error by the Dragons gave Summit a 22-19 lead. Kills by Kathleen Morano and Cassidy O'Malley had Summit at the verge of a second set win at 24-21 but a crucial service error by Summit gave KP the opening it needed as SHS could not get the key point and the Dragons tied the score at 24. A service error by KP gave Summit another set point, the 5th of the set, but another attack error by Summit snuffed out that chance.  Kent Place jumped ahead 26-25 and served for the set but Margo Reigle put down a key kill to knot the score at 26.  Kent Place did not yield though and hit for a kill and an ace to close out the set 28-26.

Margo Reigle and Cassidy O'Malley hit 5 kills apiece to lead the Hilltopper offense.  Jess Salter and Gabbie Mejia dished out 11 assists and Julianne Smolyn led the team defensively with 6 digs.

JV EARNS TOUGH 3 SET WIN FOR 5TH VICTORY OF THE YEAR

The JV Squad had another great match versus a county opponent as they looked to avenge an earlier loss at home to the Dragons.  Set 1 looked to be more of a repeat of the previous meeting as the team could not manage the Dragon serving attack and with no consistent offense to speak of, the Hilltoppers fell to the Dragons 14-25.

The 2nd set was quite different however as the Hilltoppers overwhelmed the Dragons with their serving attack hitting for 8 aces and added 4 kills to run away with the set 25-10.

Both teams started off nervously as serving and hitting errors kept both teams tied early 4-4.  Although Summit had trouble getting their serving game on track, the team hit for 5 aces in the last 9 points to pull away late and beat their town rivals 25-22.

This is the 5th victory for the team in the 2014 campaign, Wardlaw-Hartridge in 3 sets, Linden in 2 sets, Scotch-Plains Fanwood in 2, Plainfield in 2 sets and Kent Place in 3 sets.

HILLTOPPERS TAMED BY THE FARMERS OF UNION

Summit was looking to break its losing streak in Union and sweep the Farmers in the season series but it was not in the cards unfortunately. Summit played well and were competitive with the Farmers but key errors at inopportune times sealed the Hilltoppers' fate.

In set 1, a tight 1 point set was completely changed when Summit missed 4 serves in a row giving Union an automatic 4 point cushion that turned into 6 after a few Union kills in transition.  A 12-11 deficit turned into a 20-14 by the time Summit got a serve over and the set was lost a few points later at 25-16.  Summit got 2 aces by Angela Scott and hit for 9 kills in the set (Kathleen Morano, Casey Nardino and Cassidy O'Malley with 2 apiece) but also committed 6 hitting and 4 service errors which gave the Union Farmers 10 easy points in the set.  Summit got 6 of its 12 digs from Julianne Smolyn and gave up only 2 aces in the set but it was not enough to hold back the Farmer charge.

In set 2,  Summit managed only 5 kills but also had only 1 error in a battle that was decided late on serving and transition offense.  Summit trailed again late 13-15 and 3 of its 5 service errors occurred during this late stage.  The team also could not convert on its transition opportunities and was unable to keep the Union attacks in play.  Summit did have 4 blocks in this set (3 by Casey Nardino) but the Union offense proved to be too much in the end and Summit yielded the set and match on a  16-25 score.  Of note, Summit gave up only 2 aces this set but did have 5 serving errors, 1 hitting error and 2 blocking errors which accounted for 8 of Union's 25 points.  Summit on the other hand, had 5 kills, 4 blocks and 1 ace which accounted for 10 of their 16 points (Union 17 scored points and Summit 10).

JV DESTROYED IN FIRST MEETING WITH UNION SHOW TREMENDOUS GROWTH IN LOSS

The Summit JV Squad had reason to fear this matchup with the Farmers of Union.  In their first match, the team was out-served, out-hit and out-played in defense which turned the match into a rout early at Summit.

This time though, the squad passed better and generated quite a bit of offense which kept the team in the mix each set.  Summit passed fairly effectively in set 1 but failed to convert on opportunities to score and that cost the team dearly as Union out-killed the Hilltoppers 10-4 which proved to be a vital statistic in the 16-25 set loss.

In set 2, numerous Union errors along with precise serving by the Hilltoppers from the beginning had the team up 11-2.  Union began to pass better and started to capitalize yet again on weak offensive attempts by the Hilltoppers and in the latter part of the set, the Farmers had retaken the lead 21-20.  Summit just couldn't find an answer from either the service line or front-row as the Farmers pulled away and won the set and match 25-20.

SUMMIT FAILS TO TURN AWAY TIGERS OF LINDEN

The Summit Squad was looking to build on recent close games against some of the top 10 teams in the county as they faced off against the #5 team Linden.  Summit started off slow, dropping set 1 25-8 and despite a drastic turnaround in set 2 which saw the Hilltoppers trail 3-0 early but storm back to take the lead 17-14 in the latter stages, the end result was familiar, with SHS collapsing late as Linden pulls an 11-3 run to close out Summit in set 2 25-17.

Summit just could not get on track in set 1 as the Hilltoppers could not get their offense on track and hit for only 3 kills while accruing 6 errors in a -.187 first set performance.  Summit also gave up 5 aces which was enough to help Linden run away with the set 25-8.

In set 2, the team continued to struggle down 3-0 early but after a quick time-out, the team came back to tie the set and actually jump ahead late as Angela Scott brought the team back from a 4 point deficit at 9-13 to 12-13 behind thanks to 3 aces which helped trigger another 5-0 run that had Summit up at 17-14.  But key errors in both passing and offense saw the team give up 8 straight points to go down 22-17 before they were able to side-out.  Linden dispatched the Hilltoppers a few points later with a 25-17 win.

After early struggles, Julianne Smolyn was again the passing rock for the squad with a 2.08 rating for the match as she handled 24 of Summit's 47 passes. Cassidy O'Malley and Casey Nardino hit for 7 kills and only 1 error (4 and 3 respectively) but it wasn't enough to slow the Tigers.

JV FALTERS LATE AND LOSES A 3 SET HEARTBREAKER TO LINDEN

Summit was dominant in set 1 building a 13-6 and a 19-14 lead but each time the Linden Tigers did not fold and fought back to within 2 each time.  Summit was able to rely on their serving in each of those cases to snap the streak and finish the set 25-19.

In set 2, Summit's serving and passing was spotty at best early and trailed 9-3 at one point.  Summit slowly chipped away at the lead and relying on Sammi Auerbach, Grace Galuppo and Taylor Thompson's serving, Summit climbed all the way back and took the lead late 19-17.  But the Summit serve receive couldn't get on track and allowed Linden to ace their way back to the lead 21-20.  After trading points to get the score to 22-21, Summit were the lucky recipients of a couple of Tiger errors which got Summit up 23-22.  It was a short lived celebration though as a free ball error and 2 straight passing errors, gave the Tigers the unlikely win at 25-23.

Set 3 saw SHS trail throughout as the serving from key players faltered and the Linden passing seemed to be the best of the 3 sets.  Summit trailed by 3-4 points throughout but got to within 2 points late with the score 18-16.  Linden went on a 7-3 run from that point on fueled by 2 Summit service errors and 2 passing errors which spurred Linden to the upset victory, 25-19.

HILLTOPPERS' CHARGE STYMIED BY PATRIOTS

Summit faced off versus Colonia in a non-conference matchup looking for a better result than the scrimmage result they had in September when the Patriots dominated the Hilltoppers in 3 straight sets.  Although the team was far more competitive and challenged the Patriots, Colonia's offense was again too much for SHS to overcome.

In set 1, Colonia jumped out to a 10-4 lead behind 4 straight transition kills coming off unfinished Summit attacks.  Summit could not mount any consistent offense and found themselves down by 7 late (15-8) after a Patriot's ace.  Angela Scott stepped up to serve and in a set that looked lost and single-handedly brought the team back after a Colonia serving error.  Scott hit for 3 aces sandwiched among a Colonia hitting error and SHS was just within 2 points at 13-15.

The Patriots pushed back hard though and out-killed the Hilltoppers 4-0 in a 7-0 run that extended the lead back to 9 at 22-13.  The last run by the Patriots took the life out of the Hilltoppers and effectively ended the set as the teams swapped points to close out the set 14-25 in Colonia's favor.

Angela Scott led the team in scoring with 3 points in the set.

In set 2, Summit fought back from an early 2-4 to tie the score at 4 but the Patriots responded with a 10-1 run fueled by Summit's inconsistent serve receive to take control of the set at 14-5.  The Hilltoppers cut the lead down to 6 after a 4-1 run had the team down 15-9 but again Colonia responded with a 10-2 run which ended the set and match 25-11.

Due to Summit's passing woes, the offense had a hard time getting on track and managed only 2 kills in the set. Emani Miles led the team with 4 digs and Angela Scott had a team leading 3 aces and led all passers with a 2.16 pass rating.

JV SHOWS  IMPROVEMENT IN SECOND MATCH V. COLONIA

Although the JV squad fell to the Patriots 13-25, 13-25, the team showed drastic improvement in the return match of the 2014.  The difference in the match was the Patriot's ability to generate good offensive opportunities while the Hilltoppers were able to only keep balls alive.

SUMMIT VARSITY SWEPT BY SPF BUT JV GETS BIG VICTORY

The Hilltoppers knew coming into this match that Scotch Plains-Fanwood was going to be a tough team to match up against but based on their tournament experience versus SPF earlier this year, the Hilltoppers felt that they could compete and perhaps surprise their opponent.  SPF out-served and out-killed SHS though and took care of the Hilltoppers 25-14 and 25-18 in a 2-0 sweep.

The first set was decided early as Summit couldn't escape the errors and fell behind 11-2 after 6 hitting errors, 1 serving error and 2 free ball errors.  SHS and Scotch Plains played pretty evenly from then on (12-14 SPF) but Summit just could not overcome the early hole they put themselves in and lost set 1 25-14.  Summit hit -.199 for the set, 11/14 from the service line (79%) and hit only 1 ace while giving up 5 aces.

The second set was a much closer as the 8-9 score early on would indicate.  Summit hit 4 kills in this stretch which matched the entire total for set 1.  SPF went on a 5-1 run fueled by their serving that was only stopped after a Kathleen Morano kill.  Summit kept fighting to close the gap between the teams (9-14) but Scotch Plains kept the pressure up and kept Summit at bay in the late stages of the set as they held a 20-14 lead.

A long rallied ensued where Julianne Smolyn was instrumental in keeping Summit alive and the team was able to outlast SPF and earn the point.  This triggered a a short 2-0 run that had Summit to within 3 at 20-17.  But an unforced free ball error ended the run and turned the tide of the set and match as Scotch Plains finished off the set with a 4-1 run that ended Summit's day 25-18.

Summit ended with 7 kills but hit only .040 for the set and went 15/19 from the service line (79%) with only 2 aces.  The team only gave up 2 aces and had 13 digs in the set with Julianne Smolyn leading the way with 6.

JV EARNS 4TH WIN WITH TOUGH 2 SET WIN OVER SPF

The JV Squad earned their 4th win 25-20, 25-22 in a closely contested match that saw the Hilltoppers win the serving and hitting battle versus Scotch Plains-Fanwood. In set 1, Summit built up a 20-12 lead but a late run by SPF had them just within 1 at 20-19.  A free ball error sparked a 4-1 run that sealed the set at 25-20.

Set 2 was close until 8-8 when Summit went on a 9-0 run that gave the Hilltoppers a 17-8 lead.  SPF then went on 9-2 run that had them down 19-17 and after a few serving exchanges, Summit found themselves down 21-20.  SPF had a key serving error which led to a 4-0 Summit run that put the Hilltoppers at the brink of the win at 24-21 but a serving error gave the ball back to Scotch Plains at 24-22 but another key service error by SPF sealed the set and match 25-22.

SUMMIT VARSITY AND JV GROUND CARDINALS OF PLAINFIELD

The Summit squad entered play today still reeling from the 3 set loss to New Providence yesterday and had to deal with the unexpected loss of both setters due to illness for today's match versus the Plainfield Cardinals.  Varsity had comfortably beaten the Cardinals at home in the first match of the season 25-9, 25-8 but JV had lost a heartbreaker in 3 sets and was looking to avenge that loss.

Summit saw a much better Plainfield team take the court and, with both setters out, it fell upon Angela Scott and Maria Ospina to run the offense against Plainfield.  It took until the midpoint of the first set for the Hilltoppers to start playing smoothly.  Summit went on an 8-2 run that blew the game open after Plainfield had crawled to within 4 at 10-6 behind kills from Margo Reigle and Casey Nardino and an ace by Emani Miles.  Summit cruised from that point (18-8) and soon closed out the set with another good 7-3run which ended with Hannah Calabrese's 2 aces that sealed the set at 25-10.

Set 2 saw Summit jump out to a 4-1 lead off 3 consecutive aces by Angela Scott and the Hilltoppers managed to extend the lead to 6 at 11-5 as Caitlin Osmulski, Nicole Bazalar, Casey Nardino and Cassidy O'malley all got kills to extend the lead.  Another ace by Angela Scott later in the set had Summit up 19-8 as the Cardinals could not eat into the lead SHS had established.  At 20-10, Summit seemed to relax a bit and the Cardinals managed to outscore the Hilltoppers by a 6-5 margin the rest of the way but  SHS took the set 25-16 as the Hilltoppers weren't really threatened.

Cassidy O'Malley and Casey Nardino each hit for 3 kills and Julianne Smolyn dug up 7 balls to lead the Hilltoppers to victory. Angela Scott was the star of the match though as both Angela and Maria-Ospina ran the offense in an emergency today and the team did not skip a beat.  Angela's 4 aces led the team and her 8 assists were key in the success of Summit today.

JV SWEEPS IN 2 AND ERASES EARLIER 3 SET LOSS

JV turned in an excellent performance today, defeating Plainfield 25-15, 25-11 and erasing a 3 set loss they earned versus this opponent at the opening of the season.  Summit's serves and passing were much improved and led to offensive opportunities.  Sammi Auerbach and Grace Galuppo combined for 5 aces to lead the team in the first set.

The second set started a little slower for the squad but once the team regained control of the ball at 4-8 down, the squad turned up the heat from the service line (13 aces) and quickly took control of the set.  With Summit trailing 8-6, Taylor Thompson ran off 7 straight aces to push the Hilltoppers to a 13-8 lead.  Although the team lost serve eventually, Plainfield couldn't take advantage and Sammi Auerbach stepped back to serve and netted 5 more aces which effectively put away the game. Summit won the match and set in a convincing 25-11 manner.   Congrats to the JV for their 3rd VICTORY!

SUMMIT LOSES HEARTBREAKER IN 3 AS LATE SET COLLAPSES CONTINUE

The Lady Hilltoppers took on New Providence in the second of a possible 3 matches this year as Summit looked to improve on the 25-13, 25-16 loss earlier this year in New Providence.  Summit started off well with a well contested 25-18 set 1 win but New Providence erased that advantage with a 25-13 set 2 win.  In the 3rd set that the Hilltoppers worked very hard to take a 4 point lead late, it was also the stage of yet another late set collapse that saw New Providence pull away late and win with a 25-21 set 3 win.

The start of the match showed the capacity of the Hilltoppers to play with one of the better teams in the county.  Summit went down 2-0 early but proceeded to rip off 6 straight points behind Casey Nardino's serving which forced New Providence into 4 hitting errors.  New Providence fought back to take a 10-8 lead but a couple of kills by Kathleen Morano had the Hilltoppers up 13-11.  Summit did not yield the lead but rather extended it with a couple of aces by Emani Miles that had SHS up by 5 at 17-12.

New Providence closed to within 3 at 20-17 but a couple of kills by Cassidy O'Malley helped put the set away at 25-18.  Kathy Morano led the Hilltopper offense with 3 kills. Julianne Smolyn dug up 5 balls and Emani Miles scored on 2 aces to lead SHS to the first set victory. After giving up 16 aces in match 1, Summit yielded only 2 aces to New Providence in the first set.

Set 2 was a radically different story unfortunately.  Summit couldn't find its passing game and was trailing 11-3 early on.  Summit was outscored 14-10 the rest of the way in a set that the Hilltoppers gave up 10 aces which sealed the team's fate.  The team still managed to hit for 7 kills and a match high .263 hitting % despite limited offensive opportunities.  Casey Nardino and Cassidy O'Malley led the way with 2 kills apiece.  Emani Miles led defensively with 4 digs.

Both teams had rough starts to set 3 with numerous errors being committed on both sides.  An ace by Julianne Smolyn had Summit 8-6 up but the lead was short-lived as New Providence quickly tied the score and both teams battled to a 10-10 tie.  Then the set seemed to break Summit's way as kills by Cassidy O'Malley and Casey Nardino and an ace by Nardino had the Hilltoppers up by 4 at 16-12.

A timeout by New Providence seemed to break Summit's momentum as the team gave up the next 9 points and trailed 21-16.  With the match seemingly lost, the Hilltoppers found their second life behind Angela Scott's serving which netted 1 ace and led to numerous errors by New Providence. Summit fought back to within 1 at 22-21 but the team ran out of time and answers on offense as New Providence took advantage of 2 passing errors and a hitting error to close out the set and match 25-21.

Nicole Bazalar and Cassidy O'Malley had 2 kills apiece to lead the Hilltopper offense. Gabbie Mejia and Julianne Smolyn had 3 digs apiece to lead the team defensively.

Jess Salter led the team for the match with 9 assists. Cassidy O'Malley hit for 6 kills to lead the team offensively.  Julianne Smolyn had 10 digs to lead the squad defensively.

The team will look to rebound tomorrow vs. Plainfield on the road.

JV SHOWS GROWTH

After a very inconsistent 1st set where the Hilltoppers had trouble generating any offense due to poor passing (25-7 loss), Summit came out 2nd set and really showed how far they had come as they passed and defended at a higher level to allow them to be competitive and challenge for the set win.  The squad lost 26-24 but showed dramatic improvement in the set in all phases of the game.

NEW PROV WILL BE TOUGH MATCHUP FOR HILLTOPPERS

Summit has had its troubles with Tuesday's opponent, New Providence, in recent history.  In 2010, SHS lost both very closely contested matches by 2-1 and 2-0 scores (25-27, 25-21, 21-25 and 22-25, 22-25). In 2011, Summit got 2 wins in its historic season by 2-0 scores (25-13, 25-8 and 25-10, 25-15).  The last couple of seasons however, New Providence re-established its dominance with a pair of 2-0 wins in 2012 and 2013 (25-20, 25-17 and 25-15, 25-15 in 2012 and 25-22, 25-11 and 25-15, 25-15 in 2013).

In 2014, in the first match up of the season, New Providence took advantage of Summit's passing inconsistency to control the match 25-12 and 25-16.  Summit's improved passing and serving will be put to the test this Tuesday as SHS will look to break New Providence's recent dominance.

SUMMIT LOSES 2-1 TO RAHWAY INDIANS IN A CLASSIC BATTLE

The Hilltoppers traveled to Rahway to take on the Indians in a divisional matchup and came up short 2-1 in a hard fought 24-26, 25-23, 22-25 defeat at the hands of the Indians.

As the first set score of 24-26 would indicate, this was a hard fought battle between these two evenly matched sides.  Rahway took a small lead into the midpoint of the set at 8-5 but 2 aces  by Emani Miles had the Hilltoppers back tied at 8-8.

A few point later, a kill by Margo Reigle had the team up by 3 at 12-9 and a block by Casey Nardino kept the team in the lead at 13-10.  Rahway then proceeded to go on a 5-0 run which had Summit reeling at 13-15. A service error by the Indians broke the momentum but Rahway kept the pressure on and got their lead up to 4 at 15-19 after the 3rd of a series of free ball errors by SHS.

Yet again a service error by the Indians broke momentum but this time Summit responded with kills by Casey Nardino and Nicole Bazalar to knot the score at 19-19.
An outside kill and ace later, the Indians got their lead back to 2 at 22-20 but Summit’s offense came alive with kills from Reigle and Nardino to take a 1 point lead at 23-22.

But the celebration was short-lived as 2 consecutive attack errors gave the Rahway squad a 24-23 lead and a set point that was promptly snuffed out by a hitting error. With the score at 24-24, A key service error by Summit opened the door for the Indians and an ace later closed out the set 24-26 for Rahway.

Five different players had kills in a 9 kill effort in the set led by Margo Reigle’s 3 kills.  Emani Miles hit for 2 aces and no misses from the service line in addition to being the team dig leader with Julianne Smolyn with 4 digs.

The 2nd set started badly for Summit as they trailed early 1-5 but the team went on an 8-0 run fueled by Casey Nardino’s serving and Cassidy O’Malley’s offense (2 aces, 1 kill, respectively).  SHS kept that 3-4 point buffer most of the set until the Indians tied up the score at 16 in the latter stages of the match.  Rahway continued to mount the pressure as Summit was unable to convert their hitting opportunities and trailed 18-20 late.  Two kills by the Hilltoppers and a few Rahway errors had the team back even at 22-22 and a kill by Caitlin Osmulski and another ace by Nardino wrapped up the comeback 25-23.

Summit’s offense was stellar, hitting for 12 kills and a .409 hitting %.  Three different hitters had at least 3 kills in a balanced attack and the Summit serving yielded 2 aces.  Margo Reigle led the team with 4 kills in the set

The 3rd set saw the Hilltoppers fall behind early to 1-5 but kills by Casey Nardino, Cassidy O’Malley and an ace by Emani Miles had the Hilltoppers all tied up at 5.  After a couple of aces by Julianne Smolyn, the Hilltoppers had climbed back from a 9-10 hole to jump out to an 11-10 lead.

The set stayed pretty even through the latter stages as the teams battled to a 21-21 score after a Caitlin Osmulski kill.  At 22-22, SHS committed 2 free ball errors which swung the momentum of the set and match irreversibly to Rahway. A well placed ace by the Indians wrapped up a heartbreaking set and match loss for the Hilltoppers at 22-25.

Case Nardino’s 3 kills led the Summit offense but there was little support as the team mustered only 4 kills in the set.  Summit stayed in the set thanks to their serving which produced 5 aces (Angela Scott with 3 aces and Emani Miles with 2 aces) on 20/22 (91%) serving.  Defensively, the Hilltoppers did a great job with 14 total digs led by Smolyn’s 4.  The 3 point loss reflected each team’s production from the front line as Rahway received 7 kills from their front line and Summit only 4.

SUMMIT LOOKS TO BUCK LOSING TREND TO RAHWAY

Since 2007, Rahway and Summit have met on the court a total of 10 times with Summit winning only 3 wins during the stretch, the last ones in 2011.  The last 2 years, Summit has been outscored by a 220-146 margin.  The following is a performance history versus Rahway since 2007:

2007  22-25, 23-25
2009  25-23, 18-25, 13-25
2010  12-25, 12-25 and 25-13, 25-12
2011  23-25, 25-17, 25-17 and  25-20,25-19
2012  12-25, 10-25 and 20-25, 13-25

2013  25-20, 23-25, 21-25 and 13-25, 9-25

Summit will attempt to beat the historical odds tomorrow in the 11th meeting in the last 8 years between these schools.
