The JV and 9th grade squads found themselves in battles against the New Providence Pioneers on Monday afternoon. The Lady Hilltoppers were seeking their second victory of the season but both squads were not able to come out on the winning side of the ledger of their three set thrillers.
Ninth graders started off on fire, taking the first set by a 25-11 tally, using their serving as a main weapon. But the Pioneers turned the table in set 2 and despite a tight battle at the end of the set, New Providence out-lasted the Hilltoppers 25-11. The Pioneers continued their pressure into set 3 and were successful in slowly taking control of the set and match, earning a 15-6 win. Ninth graders will get 3 days to work on their game and host Cranford on Friday.
The JV Squad found themselves in a tight match early in set 1 and relied on timely hitting and defensive stops to secure a late 25-20 set 1 win. The team did not respond well to the Pioneer serving and defensive pressure in set 2 and found themselves in the wrong end of a 25-17 result. The team regrouped and rebounded nicely in set 3, using consistent serving and an effective offensive attack to close out the New Providence squad in the decisive set 3 25-21.
