FROSH TAME THE CRANFORD COUGARS AT HOME

The 9th Grade Lady Hilltoppers hosted Cranford on Friday looking to come back from a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Pioneers with a new lineup configuration.

The first rotation of the first set the tone early with Lisa Smidt rattling off 3 service points to give the Top a 4-1 lead.  Cranford had knotted the score up at 5 all in the the next few rotations but the Summit squad responded well behind the serving of Lynn Basaman who struck for 5 service points to give the team an 11-5 lead.  Cranford managed to cut the lead to 2 at 11-9 but the Hilltoppers out-scored them 2-1 in the next few rotations so that by the end of rotation 6 SHS held a 16-11 lead.

The opening set was never in doubt once Smidt got up to serve again as she hit for another 3 service points to extend the Summit lead to 20-12 and a few rotations later Basaman closed it out with two more service points at 25-13.

Set 2 took an eerily similar feel as both teams were tied at 5 in rotation 3 but then the SHS serving attack took over with Sophie Meltzer ripping 5 service points to give the Top a 10-5 lead.  The teams traded points in the next couple rotations and then Callie Armstrong stepped up to give the Top a few more points of breathing room with the scoreboard showing 15-8 by the time she was through with her serving turn.  The Cougars shrunk that lead to 17-13 within the next two rotations but Meltzer slammed the door on any Cranford hopes with a 7-0 run that closed the set and match 25-13.

9th Graders improve to 2W-1L and face off against Governor Livingston who defeated the Top in their last scrimmage of the '22 pre-season.
